Text Connection
Yossarian's suspicions and paranoia that everyone is out to kill him is actually something I can relate to myself though not quite so drastically. When I was in the 5th grade the advanced program held a competition among all of the advanced students. It was a murder situation, although fake, it was taken very seriously and clues were difficult to come by. All of the 5th grade teachers were involved as suspects and the clues led to more significant ones. Although there were plenty of different clues there was only one of each. Thus it became a race as well. The winner would receive a new Gamecube, tensions were high. Soon, nothing was safe. Backpacks were raided for clues, you were never left alone and others were always looking over your shoulder. Although they won't directly trying to make me lose, they were trying to win which was the same thing. I became paranoid much like Yossarian became due to soldiers indirectly endangering his life by doing what they were supposed to. I did all I could to protect my evidence much like Yossarian did for his life. And at the end of the competition, I did win, however, the Gamecube broke two weeks later.
I enjoyed reading your ancedote on your childhood experience of paranoia. I thought it was an interesting example of text-to-self connection. While it is often difficult to do a text-to-self connection well, as it does not carry as strong a feeling or as much clout as a world or text connection, I feel you found a strong parallel between your childhood feelings and Yossarian's. I sympathize with the untimely loss of your game console. It must have been frustrating to loose your prize so soon after you won it and after you endured so much in order to win it.
ReplyDeleteHowever, your writing was a bit hard to follow. I had some difficulty deciphering your statements through vague, grammatically incorrect phrases. I am hesitant to criticize more, for fear of coming across to harshly, but I must conclude that, had you spent a smidge more time to proofread, your blog would have come across as far more refined.
I mostly agree with Kat's review. The overall connection is very different and a nice change of personal experience rather than the usual text-to-text or text-to-world connections. However, I also felt like your personal experience lacked compared to the experience of Yossarian. Although you state that your experience is much less drastic than Yossarian's, I almost feel like the less epic experience causes a lack of connection.
ReplyDeleteIn summary, you did a great job coming up with a thoughtful connection, but the text-to-self connection itself was lacking the strength it needed.
